Been declared an ecotourism destination because of the abundance of natural resources, unique landscapes, stunning beaches and variety of flora and fauna

The Dominican government has included in the development plan of the country also the province of Montecristi, in the northwest of the Dominican Republic, in order to make a new eco-tourist destination. The Ministry of Tourism infact is working on various projects, such as the Ruta del Chivo, which will include the creation of new restaurants and tourist facilities where local families can cook dishes with the aim of enhancing a local resource, and Expreso Atlantico, a highway that will connect Montecristi with the city of Puerto Plata in order to make the northern area of the country more connected and accessible, as well as to develop and promote this historic are, also rich of natural beauty to be discovered.

This region has been declared an ecotourism destination because of the abundance of natural resources, unique landscapes, stunning beaches and variety of flora and fauna. Infact, the province of Montecristi is an area of great natural beauty and has an habitat to be preserved because the vegetation of these shrubs creates the perfect ecosystem for dozens of species of flora and fauna unique in the world. Even the “Cayos Siete Hermanos” are of great interest: seven heavenly islands completely surrounded by pristine beaches of fine white sand that degrade in a seabed dotted with coral. This area is indeed a paradise for divers for its 420 km2 long coral reef and also for its numerous archaeological treasures: more than 260 sunken galleons off its coasts dating from the eighteenth century.

The province has a rich cultural history and a wide range of natural treasures that make it a perfect destination for eco-tourism enthusiasts.
